One of Appleton, Wisconsin’s most noted citizens was magician and escape artist Harry Houdini. Throughout his very successful career Houdini proclaimed Appleton as his hometown. He returned to the city several times to visit friends and performed at the Appleton Opera House in 1897. He also challenged the local police to place him in handcuffs from which he quickly escaped.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Harry Houdini’s death. At the urging of America’s two largest magic organizations, The Society of American Magicians and the International Brotherhood of Magicians, Appleton magic enthusiasts have organized a series of yearlong events to celebrate Houdini and his accomplishments. We hope these will bring a sense of wonder and amazement to the community as well as acknowledge the amazing exploits of the world’s first international superstar.
